NYC Meteorite Auction

An auction in New York City is offering 125 meteorites for sale. The sale is being held on October the 14th by Heritage auctions.

Included in the sale is a large chunk of the moon, a 179-pound iron meteorite, a piece of the Peekskill meteorite (which is famous for puncturing a Chevy Malibu) and a complete slice of the Willamette meteorite.

Over half of the meteorites come from the Macovich collection, which are specimens of iron meteorites that are considered aesthetically pleasing. One of these meteorites, dubbed ‘the scream' as it is thought to look like Edvard Munch's painting, is estimated at $175,000 to $225,000.

However this is not the highest price estimate; the moon rock's pre-sale estimate is $340,000 to $380,000 as ‘less than 0.1% of all meteorites are lunar in origin.'

Darryl Pitt who owns a lot of the pieces for sale in the auction, said "[he] was on a mission to popularize meteorites", and that the way to attract interest was to "offer objects that were more visually captivating."
