Meteor sightings across Scotland prompt 999 calls

On Sept. 21st, the police received many calls from all over Scotland reporting possible plane crashes or weird fireworks. Experts now think these were caused by either a meteorite or space junk burning up in the atmosphere.

One eye-witness said "This bright light caught my eye and this ball if fire with a long green tail was coming over the hill," another observer said it appeared to be "something pretty large breaking up in the atmosphere."

Coastguard services, as well as police, began getting phone calls at about 23:00 from places as north as Caithness, by islanders on Skye and from other places including Glasgow and Edinburgh.

A few small objects, like tiny bits of rock or dust, break up in the atmosphere every hour but larger object are much rarer. John Davies from the royal observatory said, about the meteor sighted in Scotland, "I don't know how big but I would guess a metre by a metre."
